Makes me sick

Dear Internet Users,

What can be done about Internet Bullying?

I recently discovered an Anonymous Group of individuals on a well-known networking site called Tumblr that allows you to blog about your everyday life; whether it be about fun, school, problems or recovery from physical or mental abuse.

This group uses a feature on this website to use anonymity while searching through blogs run by depressed people struggling through recovery and suicidal ideation.

A person I follow was recently “targeted” because of a post she made about wanting to attempt suicide, and they pinned her blog to theirs in an effort to symbolize a “free-for-all” message to their members/followers.  These people then anonymously attacked her via Anonymous Asks and encouraged her to do self harm and shoot herself in the face.  I laughed at their immature behavior and then became the next target and was treated in the same manner.

During this attack it was revealed that this was an organized group ran by someone under the alias “Dope” and that they took pride in being responsible for being the catalyst that caused two suicides on Tumblr.  This group feels that “weak” people need to be exposed and then pushed to the edge to prove how self-conscious humanity has become.

This is unacceptable.

I ask you Tumblr, what are you going to do about this?  Stop protecting the Anonymous - give us the ability to flag inappropriate cowards hiding behind anonymity so that you can deal with them privately via their own account linking to the Anonymous bullying.  Do you realize this is a confession to second degree murder?  How is that okay Tumblr?  Explain this to me.

Tumblr is supposed to be a place where you can express yourself and share what influenced you to be who you are and what continues to do so.  Yes, that includes life struggles.  We aren’t expecting you to hold the Blogger’s hands and pretend the Internet is not a big scary place, but the least you can do is provide some sort of protection to the very same people you “represent” and encourage to use your services.

This is the first Blogging website I have found where simply re-blogging an image or gif that reprsents a part of you or your growth as a person says more words then an actual written text/journal entry.

It’s more then a “blog”, and I thank you for that - however it would be nice if you could take the necessary steps in keeping the integrity and purpose of the “Tumblog” a positive experience for everyone.

Tumblr is a hidden gem, a new positive force in our culture.  It’s not meant to be exploited or used to raise personal Hell in people’s lives.  If someone struggling cannot speak to people without feeling judged, how are they expected to reach out on places like this if they are going to be judged again and then encouraged to end their own lives?

Tumblr is a great place to feel understood and not “alone”.  It’s a place to find like-minded people who can share the same passions; a place where some things just don’t need to be explained due to an immediate understanding of where you have been, where you are now or where you would like to be.

Is it fair to bully others in real life?  Is it fair to do it anymously online and ecourage them to kill themselves?

By not doing anything about this, it can be safely assumed that your “intentions to never censor your bloggers” includes allowing horrible people to wreck havoc among your Blogger’s personal lives and interpersonal thoughts.  What joy does one get out of that?

Some of you may believe I am making a big deal of of something small.  Just ignore the Anons - turn off the Anon Asking feature you say.  Are you serious?  Why do people need to turn off their Anon because it’s the only way to escape abuse?  The ask function exists for it’s own purposes and is a great tool for bloggers - are you saying that people need to loose out on that function because a couple of assholes are abusing it with no threat of consequences what so ever?

From Anon to someone I follow:

From Anon to me:

I assure you - I am not making a big deal out of nothing.  Tumblr I am asking you to help prevent anymore of this from happening.  How many self harms and suicides will it take for a flagging feature on Anonymous Asks to be implemented?

I would really like to know, and I am sure many bloggers would like to know as well.

Please Re-Blog this to show your support for an implementation of a Flagging feature on Anonymous Asks.  We need the Tumblr Staff to see how many of us support this so that we can prevent things like this:

From happening again unpunished.

Sincerely,
Francesca Esther Alvelo

P.S. I chose not to be Anonymous or hide my Blog and email address because I am not a coward when it comes to saying what I believe as myself.

Bring it on, Anonymous.
